The Joys of Walnut Millwork
Liam Torres
Director of Materials
American black walnut has a warmth that oak cannot match and a grain that maple lacks. It is the wood equivalent of a perfectly tailored blazer — it works in traditional and modern settings with equal ease.
Walnut's natural colour ranges from a warm chocolate brown to a deep violet-brown, depending on where the tree was grown and how the wood was cut. Quarter-sawn walnut reveals a straight, tight grain with subtle ray flecks. Plain-sawn walnut shows more movement and figure.
We finish walnut in three ways: hand-rubbed oil (the most popular, for its matte, tactile surface), hard wax oil (slightly more durable, still repairable), and low-sheen lacquer (for high-use kitchens where protection matters most).
Walnut pairs beautifully with brass hardware, marble countertops, and limewash walls. It is dark enough to provide contrast in a light room, and warm enough to feel cosy in a dark room.
For cabinetry, we specify American black walnut from managed forests in the Ohio River Valley. The wood is dried slowly over 90 days in a kiln, then milled to size in our shop. Every panel is book-matched where it matters.
If you are choosing one wood for your renovation, make it walnut.
