Marble vs. Quartzite: Choosing the Right Stone

Liam Torres

Director of Materials

Every kitchen renovation begins with the same negotiation between beauty and practicality. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the choice of stone for countertops and islands.

Marble, particularly Calacatta and Statuario varieties, offers an unmatched luminosity. The soft veining catches light differently throughout the day, and the surface develops a gentle patina over years of use. This character — the subtle etching from a lemon wedge, the faint ring from a hot pan — is precisely what many clients fall in love with. It is a living surface.

Quartzite, by contrast, is a metamorphic rock that ranks higher on the Mohs hardness scale than granite. It will not etch from acids. It will not scratch from knives. It can take the heat of a pot placed directly on its surface. The veining is less uniform than marble, more geologic, with deeper movement.

Our rule of thumb is simple: if you want your kitchen to look exactly as it did on installation day, choose quartzite. If you want a kitchen that gathers the story of your life in its surface, choose marble.

We source from a small number of trusted quarries in Italy and Brazil. Every slab is hand-selected at the yard with the client present. The experience of seeing a full slab in natural light — not a 4×4 sample — is essential.
